We’ve been busy creating new videos here at PLCGurus.NET! We decided to do a piece for those of you who may be new to the Allen-Bradley family of PLC’s and Rockwell Software in general. In the following set of videos I will show you how to install FREE Rockwell software.

That’s right, Rockwell does provide a FREE set of tools to get you up and running on their RSLogix 500 platform and MicroLogix 1100 platform of controllers without the need to spend any $$$ at all!

The MicroLogix 1100 Controller is a powerful low cost controller that adds embedded EtherNet/IP (typically found in larger, more expensive controllers), on-line editing, and an LCD panel for quick setup and configuration.

The built-in LCD panel shows controller status, I/O status, and simple operator messages. With 2 analog inputs, 10 digital inputs and 6 digital outputs, the MicroLogix 1100 controller can handle a wide variety of tasks.

Studio 5000 Logix Emulate. It is a virtual PLC where you test the software you usually write without having a real PLC CPU with Studio 5000 Logix Emulators. Studio 5000 Logix Emulator software is a licensed program, so you must download the software by entering your license number from the Rockwell download page and then install the Studio 5000 Logix Emulator software on your computer. What Software Are You Going To Need?

There are 3 key pieces of software we are going to need in order to get up and running – the best part they are all completely free! Not only do we get free Rockwell software, we will be able to fully develop, download, upload, debug, run and test your PLC programs without buying any hardware or software at all.

  • Downloading the Tools - RSLogix 500, Emulate and RSLinx. From the next page, you will be redirected to a firmware download. It is thus important to hit the '+' button which will expand the display and show the different versions available for download.
  • RsLogix 500 is used to program the SLC 500, SLC 5/01, SLC 5/02, SLC 5/03, SLC 5/04, and SLC 5/05 PLCs plus the Micrologix 1000, Micrologix 1200, Micrologix 1400, and Micrlogix 1500 PLCs. Here are instructions for downloading the FREE version of RsLogix 500, RsLogix 500 Micro Starter Lite.
  • RSLogix 5000 Emulate In this video I show you how to completely setup, configure and download to an emulated controller using RSLogix Emulate 5000 software. RSLogix Emulate 5000 software’s main purpose is to provide a mechanism by which you can program a ControlLogix CPU without having the physical hardware.

So what are we going to need exactly:

  1. RSLogix500 Micro Lite v8.3
  2. RSLinx Lite v2.57
  3. RSLogix Emulate 500 v6.00

Locating And Downloading Your Free Software!

You would think this step would be somewhat easy, however, if you’ve ever visited the Rockwell Automation website you’ll quickly learn that even some of the simpler tasks…like this one, can prove somewhat challenging. Perhaps I’m being a little too hard on Rockwell here, they are making some really great improvements to their site, however, this has left a lot of “broken” links around the internet as result of some of the reorganization and rearrangement of things.

For this, I will reference Rockwell Knowledge Technote 63956, so I recommend if you don’t currently have an account setup, you should do so now – it’s FREE!

Rslogix 5000 software download, free

  1. Go to Product Compatibility and Download Center (PCDC)
  2. At the top of the screen search for MicroLogix 1100 then Select firmware 10.000.
  3. From selection choose Select Files option: Select RSLogix Micro Starter Lite w/o RSLinx EN
  4. Select RSLogix Micro Starter Lite w/o RSLinx EN, RSLogix Emulate 500, and RSLinx Classic Lite for MicroLogix.

Then click the Download Now button:

You’ll then be prompted to log in using the account you created above and will have the option to download the files either via their Download Manager or Direct Download after accepting their license terms.
